Taking – and passing – your Theory Test
Before you can apply to take your Practical Driving Test, you must first pass your Theory Test.
The Theory Test ensures you fully understand the rules of the road and are aware of any hazards that you may encounter while driving. There are two parts to the Theory Test; a question and answer portion, and a Hazard Perception part.

For the first part of the Theory Test, you’ll be given 50 multiple choice questions to answer – which are drawn from a bank of more than 950 questions. To pass the test, you will need to answer a minimum of 43 questions correctly. You’ll have a time limit of 57 minutes to complete this portion of the test.
The questions you are asked will be on a variety of subjects, including:
Once you’ve completed all the questions in the Theory Test, you can move onto the Hazard Perception part of the test. This consists of 14 one-minute film clips selected at random from a bank of 200. During this, you’ll need to click a mouse as soon as you spot the developing hazard. The sooner you identify the hazard, the higher points you will score. You can score a maximum of 5 points per clip.
To pass the Hazard Perception portion of the Theory Test, you will need to score a minimum of 44 points out of a possible 75. Please note that repeatedly clicking the mouse button throughout the clip will result in a score of zero.
